• 4:30am - Gotta love these early flights! Just getting ready to head out to the airport and apparently it is -17 degrees farenheight out and who knows how much colder with the wind chill. It's not like Mobile is going to be 80 and sunny but whatever it is it'll be a heck of a lot better than Minnesota, at least when it comes to temperature!!! I will do my best to post one more time while I'm waiting for my flight (assuming I can get an internet connection) but in the meantime check out my new laptop! I just got it this past Tuesday and it will be the official lifeline of Mobile NFLDC this week so this will be a trial under fire but so far I LOVE it. It's a Dell XPS M1530 and even though it is still early so far I LOVE it.
Here are a couple of pics.
• 12:00pm - I am in Mobile!
Travel went relatively smooth and we actually landed in Memphis a half hour ahead of schedule. Unfortunately there was a problem with the jetway so after sitting in the plane for about 30 minutes we finally had to move to a different gate. Needless to say the one hour cushion between our connecting flight had evaporated and by the time I got to the gate for the flight to Mobile on the other side of the airport there was only about 5 min. to spare. No big deal though, it could have been worse and I have actually been pretty lucky when it comes to travel over the years, unlike by buddy Colin Lindsay from the GBN Report. Tennessee quarterback Erik Ainge was actually on my second flight and it sounds like he's here just to meet with teams and network, although I believe he's the first alternate so should someone get hurt or drop out he will be ready to take their place. Ainge was the only player I saw at the airport this time, unlike last year when there were seemingly dozens waiting at the baggage claim when I arrived. There were a handful of autograph seekers staking out the area though. It is real sunny here and I believe they said the temperature is 41 degrees but it's supposed to get warmer the rest of the week and you certainly won't hear me complain about the cold after what I just left.
The plan now is to unpack and then head over to the Riverview Hotel, which is kind of the home base for the Senior Bowl every year. Once there I will be picking up my media credentials, grabbing a copy of the official roster and then finding a television to watch the conference championship games. The Riverview should be hopping with players, scouts, coaches, agents, etc. milling around so I will check in from there in a little bit and give you an idea of what the scene is like.
• 2:30pm - It is actually pretty quiet at Riverview. There are still a good number of scouts walking around but I think for the most part everyone is in their rooms watching the games. I did see a few players as I was registering though, including Cliff Avril, Carl Nicks and Tom Zbikowski. Here is a pic of what the scene looks like:
I also checked and the official rosters have not been released yet... Hopefully soon. I think am going to settle in and watch the game myself but I will check in if I see or hear anything noteworthy.
• 4:00pm - No rosters yet but I did see Heath Benedict, Red Bryant and Justin Forsett in the lobby and Colt Brennan is actually sitting right next to me eating and watching the game as I type this. You can tell he's definitely a "Type A" personality and he seems extremely nice and personable. He even put his cell down right in the middle of a call to sign a couple of autographs and take a picture with some fans. He also killed two plates of food so he must be either real hungry or he's trying to bulk up.
• 4:45pm - New Mexico WR Marcus Smith came up to me in the lounge while I was trying to get an internet connection to see if I had any luck. I did not. They are charging for WiFi here this year but so far we are both being cheap and looking for other options!
• 4:45pm - I am looking forward to this Packers / Giants game. I am not sure most people understand just how cold it is going to be there. There is cold and then there is dangerous cold and tonight in Green Bay it's going to be the latter. I am picking the Packers but I wouldn't bet the house on it, especially after seeing how bad they played against Chicago in cold / windy conditions in Week 16.
• 5:30pm - I moved upstairs to the ballroom where they have big TV set up to watch the next game. Mike Singletary is sitting at the next table and Raiders defensive coordinator Rob Ryan just walked through too.
• 8:00pm - The players are all in a meeting now so I think I'm going to call it a day here at Riverview and head back to my hotel. One last note though: I walked by Nebraska offensive tackle Carl Nicks and that is one big dude. Now obviously there are a lot of big guys here and I have been around my fair share of football players but this guy is truly huge and very impressive close up. I will check in one more time tonight.
• 10:00pm - Well, it's been a long day and with the travel factored in I am beat so I'm going to hit the sack and get an early start in the morning. There is a lot of fun stuff on the slate tomorrow so be sure to check back early (literally) and often.
Good night from Mobile, Alabama!
• 10:15pm - One more update! The official roster was not released today and this is the first time since I've been coming down here that it wasn't out Sunday afternoon. Now we might know why. Word is Brian Brohm has pulled out of the game and I can only assume Erik Ainge will be replacing him since I saw the Vols signal caller in town this morning. I can understand Matt Ryan pulling out because he had more to lose than gain but I think Brohm is making a mistake and it will be very interesting to hear the reasoning behind his decision. Unless he has a very good excuse I think this is going to hurt his draft stock...

• 8:00am - Today is going to be action packed!
The first thing on the schedule is the weigh-in (10:30am central), which is always a highly-anticipated event. In case you're not familiar with it this is where all of the players go up on stage in front of a ballroom full of hundreds of scouts and coaches in just their drawers to be accurately weighed and measured. It definitely has the feel of a meat market but at the same time it serves an important purpose because at times schools will fudge the vitals of their players so this is an opportunity to find out just how big or small some of these top prospects really are. I will check in one more time before I head over to the convention center with some of the things I will be looking for at the weigh-in.
Then later on today we have the first two practices but Monday is always a little different from the rest of the week. Instead of having staggered practices both squads will take the field at the same time today (2:45-4:15pm central), with the North at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile and the South heading over to Fairhope, which is about 30 minutes away. Rest assured I will have both sessions covered, one way or another! As always I will go right to work on typing up reports as soon as they are finished and knock them out a.s.a.p. and I'll be updating this blog as many times as possible throughout the day.
• 9:00am - I am about to head over to Riverview but as promised here are some of the main things that I will be watching for at the weigh-in:
* How tall is Colt Brennan and more importantly how much does he weigh?
* How tall is Oniel Cousins? U.T.E.P. listed him at 6-4 but if he's much shorter than that teams might start leaning more towards offensive guard than left tackle with him.
* At defensive end how much do all of the 'tweeners weigh? I am talking about Cliff Avril, Titus Brown, Bruce Davis, Quentin Groves, and Darrell Robertson.
* At linebacker have undersized guys like Xavier Adibi, Jordon Dizon, Ali Highsmith and Wesley Woodyard been able to put on some weight?
Those are just a few of the things I will be watching but beyond just getting the raw data in terms of heights and weights it is also very useful to see the body types of all these players. This will be my fourth Senior Bowl weigh-in and believe me when I say that all 300 pounders are not created equal. Some guys can carry weight well and some do not.
As soon as the weigh-in is over I am going to type up the results, which will be located HERE and after that I will do a blog entry with some of my initial thoughts / impressions.
• 2:40pm - Just got done typing up all of the weigh-in results and it's time for a practice so there's no time for a big blog update. As soon as practice is over I will come out to the car and give you some information on the roster and the weigh-in.
• 4:45pm - Practice is over and I'm heading back to the hotel to type up some reports.
In the meantime here's a pic of ESPN's Chris Mortensen working a Dolphins source:
• 5:30pm - We finally got our hands on the official roster this morning and there were quite a few surprises. We already knew that Glenn Dorsey, Chris Long, Jake Long and Matt Ryan weren't going to be here but a number of other prospects dropped out as well. We heard about Brian Brohm last night but Jeff Otah, John Carlson, Quentin Groves, Mike Jenkins and Craig Steltz were all expected to play but are absent for one reason or another. Needless to say it's pretty disappointing to see so many top players not here, especially since this wasn't considered to be a great crop to begin with. Nevertheless their absence should just create opportunities for their competition.
• 6:30pm - Sorry it has taken so long to get to my impressions from the weigh-in posted but I thought it was more important to get all of the results typed up and online first.
The award for most impressive physique goes to Barry Richardson, who really looks the part of stud left tackle. Now if only he would play like one! Others who stood out include Adarius Bowman, Kellen Davis, Chris Johnson, Gosder Cherilus, Peyton Hillis, Keith Rivers, Philip Wheeler and Tom Zbikowski. Carl Nicks was the heaviest player at 343 lbs., Brad Cottam was the tallest, while Cherilus had the longest arms and the biggest hands.
On the flip side Dre Moore probably looked the worst with Robert Felton not far behind. Colt Brennan, Fred Davis and Andre Fluellen might have lost some ground as well since they all measured in shorter than they were listed at. Tiny Oregon St. kicker Alexis Serna brought up the rear in every category but if you take him out of the equation Justin Forsett was the shortest and Dorian Bryant was the lightest.
There wasn't necessarily any groundbreaking news from the weigh-in this year but be sure to check out all the results because there are plenty of interesting things in there.
• 10:00pm - All right, I've been typing for hours but the practice reports are up and so are the observations for those who are interested in which players each team was seen talking to after practice. This year I decided to do my practice reports in bullet points rather than paragraph form so hopefully it's easier to read through and pick out key tidbits. Since both squads practiced at the same time today I was only able to cover one personally but Colin Lindsay of the Great Blue North Draft Report was good enough to provide his impressions of the South session. Be sure to check out all of the new content!
• 10:30pm - I am going to call it a night. We will start back up early tomorrow!!!
Tuesday - January 22nd, 2008
• 7:00am - Good morning! Today is the start of the "normal" schedule and for the next three days the North will practice from 9:30am -11:00am, the South will hit the field from 1:45pm-3:15pm and there will be a press conference with coaches and players at 5:30pm. In the past the North and South teams used to rotate the morning and afternoon practices but that changed for some reason this year and I think the North got the short end of the stick. Usually there are quite a few more people at the afternoon sessions, thus more exposure. I will check in one more time before I leave the hotel.
• 8:15am - I am about to leave the room to grab some breakfast and head over to Ladd-Peebles. One more thing on the "injured" players who dropped out yesterday. Isn't it funny how just about every guy who was too "injured" to play just happened to be ranked among the Top 3-5 players at his position? If you aren't catching on let's just say I am skeptical about 99% of the situations and I think most of these guys are making a mistake by not playing down here. In the cases of Glenn Dorsey, Chris Long, Jake Long and even Matt Ryan I can understand not wanting to take part because they have more to lose than gain. Others, however, are far from being on solid footing when it comes to their draft status and this week could have been a huge benefit to them. Yes, I am talking to you Brian Brohm. Basically I think some guys have an inflated sense of where they stand right now and there are only few top guys who can legitimately say they have nothing to prove and can afford to sit this event out. I guess we will see if the decision they made was the right one or not in a few months...
I am off but I will check in again quick after the first practice.
• 11:40am - Just got back to the car from the morning practice. I am actually typing and uploading this from the parking lot since the stadium has a WiFi connection. There were a lot of famous faces here today which is always a good sign that the Senior Bowl is in full swing. Among those that I saw were Romeo Crennel, John Fox, and Chiefs General Manager Carl Peterson. Drew Rosenhaus was also making the rounds and this year he is representing, among others, Dan Connor, Kellen Davis, Geno Hayes, Kevin Smith, Jack Ikegwuonu, Devin Thomas and Dominique Barber. I will also have a ton of player/team observations for tonight so watch out for that but as a little teaser let's just say the Chiefs were zeroing in on offensive tackles, even double-teaming Carl Nicks with two scouts at the same time. I am going to go type up the North practice report now and hopefully I'll have it ready to upload before the next practice at 1:45pm central. Oh, and for those in Jacksonville I will be on the radio with my old buddy Rick Ballou at 1:05pm central / 2:05pm central so if you are in the area be sure to tune in!
• 1:43pm - With only minutes to spare I just uploaded the North practice report from this morning. I am heading into Ladd-Peebles for the South practice right now but I'll check back in afterwards and give you an idea of what to expect tonight.
• 4:45pm - Practice is over and I am heading over to Riverview for the press conference, which is always surprisingly informative. One little note that I picked up at practice today: Texas wideout Limas Sweed's wrist is still not 100% and he was actually just recently cleared to play. However, he wanted to come to this game and compete and I know I love that attitude. Once I get back to the hotel, which should be around 7:30pm, I will update the blog before I start typing up all of the reports.
• 7:40pm - It was a good press conference tonight and we heard from Lane Kiffin, Mike Nolan, Chad Henne, J.D. Booty, Andre Woodson and Colt Brennan. I am going to type up a report about what was said there but I wanted to update you on some roster moves in case you hadn't heard yet. Yesterday it looked like Kentwan Balmer was limping and as it turns out he is indeed injured and will be replaced. Beau Bell's status is also uncertain after he went down in practice today. For the South Georgia Tech linebacker Gary Guyton was added to replace Tavares Gooden, who is still ailing from a pre-existing injury, and Iowa St. defensive tackle Ahtyba Rubin has been added to the roster as well and will be an interesting guy to watch. Early Doucet is also dinged up and while his status is still uncertain it sounded like he'd be out at least a couple of days.
I am going to start typing up the report in a bit so keep an eye out for that.
• 9:00pm - The list of today's player / team observations is now live and it might be the longest yet! I'm moving on to the press conference notes and then the South practice report. Bear with me, I'm knocking these out as fast as I can.
• 12:10am - It's been a real long day but I finally finished up the last report.
I am hitting the sack to get five or six hours of sleep before it's time to get up and do it all over again. Talk to you in the morning!
Wednesday - January 23rd, 2008
• 7:30am - Time to start a brand new day of coverage! The schedule should be pretty much the same today, with the North practicing in the morning, the South in the afternoon and a press conference this evening. The one notable exception is you will be able to hear my on my weekly internet radio show / podcast tonight at 6:30pm central at www.primesportsnetwork.com. Don't miss that because I'll be talking in-depth about my impressions from Mobile so far and much more.
• 8:30am - All right, I'm going to grab some breakfast and then head over to the stadium for the North practice. I definitely want to take another good look at the quarterbacks today and see if anyone finally asserts themselves and linebacker is another position I am going to try and pay a little extra attention to. And then of course you can never go wrong with checking out "The Pit" to see those offensive and defensive linemen going 1-on-1. I will post a real quick update after practice.
• 11:35am - Just got back from practice. I'm a little late because I had a nice chat with Matt Bitonti from DraftDaddy.com, which is always fun. If you haven't checked out their blog yet make sure you do because I'm almost certain you will be bookmarking it.
It was a physical practice today, with Owen Schmitt and Shawn Crable both going down with injuries and DeMario Pressley not looking looking 100% either. Chris Johnson was no where to be seen either and Beau Bell was also absent after getting hurt yesterday. It looks like Iowa's Bryan Mattison (the son of Florida Gators defensive coordinator Greg) is the guy who's replacing Kentwan Balmer on the roster but at 270lbs. he is going to have issues playing defensive tackle all week like he did today.
As for sightings, Jets coach Eric Mangini was making the rounds, Sam Baker's dad David, who is the Commissioner of the Arena Football League, is here and he's even bigger than Sam. Southern Cal coach Pete Carroll was on the North sideline as well, no doubt supporting the nine former Trojans on the North roster as well as his former assistant Lane Kiffin.
I am going to go start typing up this mornings practice report but no guarantees that it will be finished before this afternoon's South session...
• 1:25pm - I am not quite finished with the North practice report but I will get right back to work on it as soon as the South practice is over. I'll check in afterwards.
• 4:00pm - The South practice is over. We had our first real fight today and it was a big one, but you'll have to wait for the practice report to here who was throwing the haymakers. I also saw Trent Dilfer walking around, Jags coach Jack Del Rio and San Diego quarterback Josh Johnson was here as well.
On the roster front Limas Sweed is done due to the same wrist injury and he was replaced by Dexter Jackson of Appy St. I wanted to get a good look at Iowa St. DT Ahtyba Rubin today but it slipped my mind so I will have to pay extra attention to him tomorrow. I can say this: the guy is real thick!
I am heading over to Riverview for the press conference and then I'll be typing up a bunch of reports tonight so watch out for those.
Oh, and be sure to tune into my internet radio show / podcast at 6:30pm central tonight because I will be talking all about the Senior Bowl. You can listen to that at www.primesportsnetwork.com.
• 8:30pm - Back to the hotel from the press conference and doing the radio show.
You better have all listened! :)
I have the North practice report just about done so that should be up in the next 15 minutes or so. After that I will knock out the press conference report but the big news from there was on the injury front. Both Owen Schmitt and Beau Bell have injured knees and while the severity is unknown they are out of the game. Others who are listed as day-to-day are Kentwan Balmer (hamstring), Chris Johnson (shoulder), Jamar Adams (heel), Shawn Crable (back). I will let you know if I hear any more on their status.
• 11:20pm - Today's player / team observations and press conference reports are up.
Just the South practice report left to go...
• 12:35am - I just made the South practice report live and with that I'm hitting the sack.
Thursday - January 24th, 2008
• 7:00am - Good morning! I just opened up the shades and it looks like it did rain at some point during the night but it's not raining now so hopefully the weather holds up. We've actually been pretty lucky weather-wise this week because the extended forecast that I was looking at before coming down was pretty ominous.
In terms of the coverage it should be more of the same today, although with the week winding down the practices probably won't be quite as physical. In fact, last night at the press conference Mike Nolan said the South will indeed be going in just helmets today.
I will check in once more before I head out for Ladd-Peebles.
• 8:45am - I am heading out the door but I got some e-mails from a few people who were having trouble viewing the main Senior Bowl Headquarters page so I tweaked it a bit and hopefully it will work for everyone now. Let me know if you are still having issues.
I'll check in when the North practice gets out.
• 11:15am - Well, so much for the weather cooperating. Just as I was leaving the hotel the rain started and it pretty much came down at a decent clip throughout the whole practice, finally stopping towards the very end. The cold wind didn't help matters either and I'm actually having a hard time feeling my fingers as I type this. Apparently it's -27 back home in Minnesota though so I guess I have to keep it in perspective.
I am going to start typing up the practice report now and I will try to have it up before the South session begins at 1:45pm this afternoon so watch for that.
In the meantime here is a pic of what the scene looked like this morning:
• 1:40pm - I just made this mornings North practice report live to check it out.
I'm about to head into the stadium for the South practice (luckily it has stopped raining for the time being) but I will do a blog entry when I get back to the car.
• 3:30pm - Wow, it is not warm in Mobile today!
Just got done with the South practice and I'm going to type up and upload the player / team observations from today. Let me warn you though there aren't many, it seems like just about all of the scouts and coaches have already gone home. In fact, the stands were pretty overall empty today, maybe even moreso than usual for a Thursday.
Once I'm finished with that it's off to Riverview for the final press conference of the week. I am anticipating some good end of the week insights from Lane Kiffin (who was checking out the competition at the South practice this afternoon) and Mike Nolan tonight so check back for that report a little bit later on.
• 5:20pm - Just got finished typing up the South practice report so check that out.
The press conference is in about ten minutes so I am going to head over there for that.
I will post an update once I get back to my hotel after the press conference.
• 7:00pm - Back at my hotel. The big news from the press conference was that Fred Davis injured his knee, although they don't know the severity just yet. The North squad is really beginning to look like a MASH unit! Oregon State running back Yvenson Bernard has been added to the North roster and Lane Kiffin said they might still be adding a fullback as well since Owen Schmitt is out. If not Chauncey Washington will see action at fullback in the game, which I'm sure he wouldn't be too happy about.
Look for that entire press conference report later tonight.
• 8:00pm - And all the reports are up! I have no idea how I got done four hours earlier than the last couple of days but I'm certainly not complaining.
I am probably going to just take it easy the rest of the night, maybe even have an adult beverage or two downstairs in the lobby...
I'll catch you bright and early tomorrow morning.
Friday - January 25th, 2008
• 8:00am - Rise and shine! I'm not going to lie to you today is going to be a pretty slow day. The North and South each have a one hour back-to-back walkthrough and those will run from 9:30am-11:30am central. For those who don't know a walk-through is basically just what it sounds like, with the team lining up and just jogging through some plays. It's very light work so I'm not sure how much there will be to take away from it but I'll be there and anything I see will be put in the report. Later on today the players will visit a local children's hospital and then tonight they have the Fan Frenzy in the convention center where fans can get autographs. That is always packed. Other than that this is really a day to take it easy before the game. I will check in again after the walk-throughs.
• 11:15am - The walk-through's are over, although to say there is very little to report would be an understatement. Nevertheless I am going to go type up some very short reports on what I saw this morning so watch for those in a little bit.
I do have one piece of big news though...
I talked to Mike Nolan and he said that Colt Brennan will be starting for the South tomorrow. He couldn't remember if Andre Woodson or Erik Ainge would go second. Also, the North has a new fullback on the roster and he's wearing #16 but I'm not sure who it is yet. I'll see if there's an updated roster out when I pick up my gameday credentials this afternoon. I'll check in again after I upload the walk-through reports.
• 1:00pm - The walk-through reports are up. There isn't much there so be warned but I think there is a interesting tidbit or two so check them out.
• 2:15pm - I just made the Senior Bowl Edition of Ask NFLDC where I answered reader submitted questions live. You can check that out via the Senior Bowl Headquarters page.
I am going to head over to Riverview and pick up my credentials for the game tomorrow and then go tour the U.S.S. Alabama battleship. I actually tried to do that tour a year ago but I underestimated just how huge those things are and only got about 1/3 of the way through. I am also going to check out a flick tonight ("Cloverfield") so I'm not sure when I will blog again but there will definitely be at least one more entry today.
• 6:00pm - Still no word on who the new fullback is but I guess we'll find out tomorrow.
Just saw this mess about Al Davis wanting Lane Kiffin to resign too... What a mess that organization is! Why anybody would want that job now I'll never know.
I'm going sign to off the blog for tonight and head out but I'll check in tomorrow morning.
Saturday - January 26th, 2008
• 12:00pm - It was nice to sleep in today!!!
The game starts in a few hours so I'm going to get ready, grab some lunch and head on over to the stadium. As usual it's raining and basically miserable out so I will probably be watching from the press box rather than the sideline again this year. I'm not sure if I will blog during the game or not but I'm leaning towards not just because there really isn't much to say. I mean you're watching the same thing I am... Regardless of what happens there I will definitely be typing up game reports for both the North and South tonight so watch for that. Every year at this time I always make my prediction for who I think will win and even though I am usually wrong I will take the South in this one since the San Francisco staff has so much experience coaching down here. The key will be whether or not the South quarterbacks will be able to get the ball to their skill position playmakers. I'll take Colt Brennan as my game MVP, although I have to admit I am rooting for Andre Woodson to play well after the rough week he has had. I may or may not check in before or during the game but if nothing else I'll blog again when I get back to the hotel tonight.
Oh, I did go to see "Cloverfield" last night and it was pretty good, I'll give it a B-. If you liked "The Blair Witch Project" you will probably enjoy this one because it's very similar.
• 8:00pm - Just got back to the hotel. What a great game! In my four years of coming down here that was easily the best one I've seen. Needless to say I had a great time.
It was drizzling in the first half but the rain wasn't unbearable like last year so I took in the entire game from the sidelines. I am going to type up my initial impressions in a bit but I think a lot of the guys that I highlighted as having strong showings throughout the week in my daily reports actually stood out in the game as well, i.e. Lavelle Hawkins, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Sedrick Ellis, Chad Henne, etc. The cream rose to the top.
I am going to take a break for an hour or so to try and warm up / dry out but look for those gameday reports a little later on tonight. I will check in with the block then too.
Here's a pic from tonight of Lavelle Hawkins and Dominique Rodgers going head-to-head:
• 10:00pm - Just a note that I forgot to mention earlier.
I confirmed after the game that Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie is indeed related to Antonio Cromartie. Apparently they are cousins. Those are some good bloodlines!
• 1:45am - I just uploaded both game reports with my initial thoughts.
I will check in one more time tomorrow morning.
Sunday - January 27th, 2008
• 7:00am - Good morning for one last time from Mobile! This week went SO fast I can't hardly believe it's already time to go home. The plane leaves at 11:25am central today and it's the same route going home as it was coming, with a quick stop in Memphis along the way. Anyhow, I will check in at least once more before I leave and let you know what to expect over the next couple of days. Be back soon.
• 8:30am - Okay, here's the plan: When I get back home tonight I'm going to take another good look at the game as well as go over all of my notes. On Monday I am going to do the Senior Bowl Stock Watch with lists of who I thought was most impressive and why as well as revise my rankings to reflect what happened in Mobile. Then on Tuesday I will have my final review of the entire week, with a position-by-position look at every player. That should probably wrap up the 2008 Senior Bowl coverage, at which time I'll be back on a normal schedule of inputting scouting reports and maybe even doing a new mock draft as well. So as you can see there is still plenty to look out for over the next couple of days and well beyond! I'll check in one final time before I leave for the airport.
• 9:00am - It looks like this is it. I am starting the long trek back to Minnesota now and if everything goes as planned I should be home sometime late this afternoon. It has been a great week though and I once again just want to thank everyone for your continued support because without all of you none of this would be possible.
