January 22, 2008 Senior Bowl - Tuesday Press Conference Notes
Scott Wright
President, NFL Draft Countdown
Lane Kiffin - North Head Coach
Very excited to be here and feels it's a great opportunity. Thinks it's an advantage because they get insight on the players both on and off the field.
They are treating this just like a game week.
They installed a huge playbook, especially on offense, because they wanted to challenge the players.
Said he thought Joe Flacco had done a "really good job".
Thinks quarterback is the team's strength.
Kentwan Balmer is injured and will be replaced on the roster.
The severity of Beau Bell's injury is still unknown.
Mike Nolan - South Head Coach
Excited to be here but not happy that this is the 3rd year in a row that they are coaching because it means they haven't been very good.
Has been here as an assistant coach at least five other times as well.
There are nine players still on the roster that they coached in the Senior Bowl and two of them they traded up in the first round to select, referring to Manny Lawson and Joe Staley.
Says this is also a great chance to get a look at how Mike Martz and the new offensive staff works together.
They will run some of the 'tweeners through linebacker drills.
Matt Forte caught his eye and he asked their scouts about him. Says he's big, strong and physical.
Likes the defensive backs they have here and says that they have good height but not necessarily great size. Said they are football players and not just track stars. Singled out Leodis McKelvin, Marcus Griffin, Patrick Lee as guys who impressed him.
Gary Guyton and Ahtyba Rubin have been added to his roster.
Tavares Gooden is still being bothered by a pre-existing injury.
When asked about the guys who opted not to take part in this game he said he wants players who love the game and aren't afraid to compete on his team. Says he won't have to worry about that factor with the guys who are here participating.
Chad Henne, QB, Michigan (North) John David Booty, QB, USC (North)
Both excited to be here, especially since they have former college teammates here with them. Booty has eight and Henne has two.
Henne feels he had good timing in leaving Michigan now since they are installing a spread offense, which he obviously wouldn't be a fit for due to his lack of mobility.
Booty said that the biggest adjustment so far has been the terminology and the language while Henne said it's been pretty easy because this offense is very similar to what he ran with the Wolverines.
J.D. Booty seemed real comfortable and outgoing in front of the microphone.
Colt Brennan, QB, Hawaii (South) Andre Woodson, QB, Kentucky (South)
Brennan said that in high school he was coached by quarterback gurus Bob Johnson and Steve Clarkson and learned the West Coast Offense with Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart. In fact, he went to Colorado to run the West Coast Offense. He said it is all coming back to him and it's like riding a bike.
Woodson decided to participate this week because he wanted to compete and work with NFL coaches. He feels it's privilege to be here.
It's pretty hard not to like Colt Brennan and he is one of the most charismatic and outgoing football players that I have ever been around. Whether or not that will help him achieve success at the next level remains to be seen but he definitely has the "It" factor and I have been very impressed with him off the field.
