Senior Bowl - Wednesday Press Conference Notes
Scott Wright
President, NFL Draft Countdown

Lane Kiffin - North Head Coach

   • His team is beat up but they fought through it.

   • Plans to play the quarterbacks evenly but the pecking order is still undecided.

   • Says Joe Flacco has a real strong arm and big-time accuracy but is still transitioning from working in the shotgun so much in college.

   • Thinks that Lavelle Hawkins has had a great week and helped himself. Felt Hawkins has made some big plays downfield but still needs to work on his ball security.

   • Said that Martin Rucker is a smooth catcher and after struggling as a blocker on the first day he has really responded to the coaching.

   • Sam Baker is playing more physical and finishing better compared to last year.

   • Thinks Carl Nicks can play either offensive tackle or offensive guard.

   • Says that Dan Connor is a leader who has really studied the playbook. In Oakland's defense Connor would be looked at for an inside role.

   • Feels like Bruce Davis could play either defensive end or outside linebacker in the NFL depending on scheme.

   • The thing that stands out to him about Chad Henne is his impressive velocity.

   • Said that Shawn Crable is a great athlete and when they were recruiting him at USC the Trojans were even looking at him as a potential tight end at one point.

   • Says that Jordy Nelson has phenomenal hands but isn't the fastest guy out there.

Mike Nolan - South Head Coach

   • Said the South will practice in just helmets tomorrow and that they did the bulk of their work in the first three days.

   • Reiterated that he wants guys on his team who love football / want to compete.

   • Thinks that Early Doucet is going to try and rest his injury and see if he can give it a go on Saturday. He did not sound too optimistic though.

   • Doesn't think any more wide receivers will be added to his roster.

   • Thought that today's fights were positive for the most part but that it was not smart to be swinging at a guy's head when he's wearing a helmet.

   • Said that Heath Benedict is competing but also still adjusting to the competition.

   • Chris Williams is athletic and has played both left and right tackle.

   • Said that the 49'ers might be looking for a big running back to take some of the load off Frank Gore when responding to a question about Matt Forte.

   • One of the big things he looks for in offensive linemen is toughness.

   • The North and South staffs will switch teams tomorrow night for 30 min. to interview the players positionally.

Keith Rivers, OLB, USC (North)
Eddie Royal, WR, Virginia Tech (North)

   • Royal is honored to be here and Rivers thinks it's a great opportunity to compete against the best.

   • Rivers has played all three linebacker spots and feels he's versatile.

   • Royal wants to show that he's an every-down receiver, especially coming from a program where one wideout was not featured. Also wanted to show coaches what type of player and person he is.

   • Rivers wanted to show teams that he can be physical with a mean streak and tough in a phone book. Also wanted to show that he's a smart, high-character guy.

   • Rivers feels that every day here is an interview.

   • Royal thought that the Virginia Tech massacre made the team appreciate life more and come together for the University.

   • Rivers said the best thing about Pete Carroll is that he teaches his players how to compete every play.

   • Royal said the best thing about Frank Beamer is that he's a family guy and excels when it comes to special teams.

Andre Caldwell, WR, Florida (South)
Tashard Choice, RB, Georgia Tech (South)

   • Choice said he has had a pretty good Senior Bowl experience and has enjoyed meeting the other players and getting NFL coaching. He can't wait for the game.

   • Caldwell feels this is a great opportunity to compete with top athletes.

   • Caldwell said that Mike Martz is the guy who corrects them when they do something wrong and congratulates them when they do something right.

   • Choice doesn't know what running back he'd compare himself to.

   • Caldwell talks to his older brother every day. Reche has told him just to be himself and compete.

   • Caldwell says that the Niners coaches have adjusted his technique.

   • Choice runs well between the tackles, reads blocks and understands the offense.
